Of all that has happened in San Millán de La Cogolla the most important things stay with you. The riojans will always remember the day when the monasteries rose to universal category. But the process has not finished. It´s good to let yourself be carried along by the joyful euphoria of that victory, but still there is alot of work to be done. The Riojan Government has constituted "The San Millán Foundation": an organisation called to develop the important initiatives, always related (in a bigger or smaller degree) with the Castilian language. Although still the exact date isn´t known, The San Millán Foundation will be born after the summer and it hopes to initiate it´s true colours in September, before San Mateo. The cultural councillor Luis Alegre, marked the initial proposal of the Foundation: 100 million pesetas. It will be considered a joy that the constitution of The San Millán Foundation is "one of the most important acts that we are going to undertaken in this legislation". An initiative of a slow birth, that started to hatch in December; when the emilianense monasteries reached universal dignity: "After it´s declaration as Heritage of Humanity, this well called for an operative managing organ, efficient and modern, that maintained it in an excellent condition infront of all the eyes of the hispanic speakers. Amongst the commitments of the foundation is to create one of the largest investigation centres of Castilian, to protect the valley of Cárdenas, promote tourism, look after the cultural and monastic life, to encourage studies on the language, etc... |

The government of the Foundation will fall back on a band of people of much merit. Furthermore from the responsible politicians, the Director Generals of Unesco, from R.A.E., from the History Academy, of the Belles Artes (beautiful arts), the secretary of the Association of Academies of the Language, the rector at the University of La Rioja, the director of the Cervantes Institute, the prior of Yuso, Lord Mayor of San Millán and a representative of the Sephardic community, among others, will occupy a governing seat. To a personal title they have already accepted the offer of the writer Camito José Cela, Carmen Iglesias (director of the Centre of Constitutional Studies). Ángel Martin Municio or Isaac Navon (ex-prime minister of Israel). As the initaitive tries to be supra-regional, it´s promoters wish that all the Spanish autonomies include themselves in the patronage. At the same time, the riojan monasteries will be like a bridge of union with other hispanoamerican academies and with the culture of those countries. The relation of the language and new technologies will deserve special attention from the future organsiation. |
For the prior of Yuso, Jesús Lerena, to whom Diario LA RIOJA awarded the Award of Excelence of La Rioja, "the declaration of the Heritage of Humanity to the monasteries must signify a symbol of unity, harmony and understanding among the people that speak hispanic". Lerena felt proud that the support to the emilianense candidature has been a point of union among the religous forces. The prior assessed the Declaration as "very positive", and that now La Rioja was in a position to look big, to be universal. Furthermore on reflecting his satisfaction of the events, the prior revindicated that this Declaration goes accompanied by "a major endowment of economic funds that permit us to resolve some major deficiencies that both the monasteries actually have. |
